Toshizō Hijikata (土方歳三 Hijikata Toshizou) is the Vice-Commander of the Shinsengumi and the main male protagonist of the anime series as Chizuru's canon love interest. He is Kondou's longtime friend who helped him form the Shinsengumi in Kyoto. Kondou calls him "Toshi".

Hijikata is the one who orders to take Chizuru to the Shinsengumi headquarters for questioning, and he is the one Chizuru instantly notices. His role in the squad is to be the fierce Demon Vice-Commander that everyone respects and fears. Despite being Kondou's subordinate, Hijikata is the one who makes most decisions in the Shinsengumi, often asking for Kondou's opinion or approval, however, he never tries to take the lead away from Kondou officially and never disobeys his command. His goal is to make Kondou a General despite them both not being born into samurai families. Additionally, he treats all the Shinsengumi members as true warriors regardless of their background and holds them to a high standard.

Hijikata is based on the historical Hijikata Toshizō.

Appearance

Toshizou is a handsome young man (a nod to his real-life counterpart) popular with ladies. He has waist-length black hair and dark violet eyes, and he is about average in height within the Shinsengumi being taller than Hajime Saitou, but shorter than Souji Okita.

Demon Vice-Commander rarely smiles and mostly tries to keep a serious professional attitude.

Underneath the standard blue haori, cord and headband, he wears a purple kimono top and gray hakama in the first season and carries a katana and wakizashi on his left hip. His sword is an 11th generation Kanesada, an impressive blade, as noted by Saitou.

In Season 2, Hijikata cuts his hair to chin-length and changes to an elaborate black and purple with yellow outlines western-style outfit.

Personality

Hijikata is a strict disciplinarian to his troops, hence his nickname the "Demon Vice-Commander" (鬼の副長). At the same time, he is very thoughtful and mature when making decisions, he puts the Shinsengumi and Isami Kondou above everything else. Hijikata believes that it is his duty to rule with an iron fist as the shadow behind Kondou's light. He takes the Shinsengumi's welfare to be his personal responsibility and runs himself ragged with trying to keep the organization going single-handedly. He dislikes accepting help from others and appearing weak, though he will put the survival of the Shinsengumi above things like honor. Hijikata's greatest desire is to elevate the commander's position and make Kondou a great samurai.

Hijikata has a lot of respect for women, which is one of his reasons for being protective of Chizuru Yukimura. When she first encounters the Shinsengumi in Season 1, it is Hijikata who vouches for her life, arguing that if she were a threat he would deal with her. Souji Okita, who has known Hijikata since his childhood, has a habit of messing around with him, especially with his haiku books. Although Hijikata is exasperated by Okita's behavior, he sees him as a little brother and is very protective of him, to a fault.

Though his troops grumble at his strictness, the Shinsengumi highly respects Hijikata and regards him as a true warrior, despite his low birth. His close companions have been able to see through his harsh exterior and Keisuke Sannan has remarked that Hijikata is far too kind.

Though Hijikata tends to be a worrywart, he is, in truth, a caring person who values his friends above all else, even his own safety. He is willing to go to great lengths in order to protect the honor and well-being of those he holds dear.

First Season

Hijikata's iconic arrival

Hijikata's iconic arrival

Hijikata is first seen being on patrol looking for the failed Rasetsu that have escaped from the Shinsengumi. Finding them, he also finds Chizuru hiding in the alley. He points his sword at her and orders her not to run. After she has passed out, he takes her into custody and brings her to the headquarters to question and decide her fate. There he learns that she is Koudou Yukimura's daughter, and since the Shinsengumi are also looking for Koudou, they decide to let her stay with them until she finds her father.

Hijikata is always there in each situation to make the final decision. He is the one to say whether Chizuru can or cannot eat with the others, whether she should or should not bother Sannan and bring him food, whether she can or cannot go out on patrols with others, and so on. Even though Kondou is officially the leader of the Shinsengumi, he listens to Hijikata in regarding all the problematic occurrences, so Hijikata is de-facto in charge of what is happening within the Shinsengumi.

After learning of the Chōshū plot against Kyoto and the emperor, Hijikata takes the larger part of the Shinsegumi to Shikkokuya where he hopes to apprehend the conspirators. However, Chizuru comes with the message that the Chōshū are actually at Ikedaya, to where Hijikata hurries. He does not let any non-Shinsegumi pass, opposing the Aizu Domain, to make sure that nobody takes credit for the Shinsegumi's hard work.

When the need arises to relocate the Shinsengumi to bigger headquarters, Hijikata comes up with a plan to use Nishi Hongwanji Temple which is heavily supported by Kashitarou Itou, even though raises concerns with Keisuke Sannan.

Chizuru and Hijikata protecting each other

Chizuru and Hijikata protecting each other

Later in the season, Hijikata encounters Chikage Kazama a few times, most of them while protecting Chizuru, even though the first one was after Hijikata has ordered to divide the forces and chase the Chōshū to different places. He himself goes with Chizuru and Shinpachi meeting Kazama on the way and engaging in a fight with him after the latter insults Okita's swordsmanship skills.

Later Kondou gets shot, and Hijikata blames himself for letting him go alone. This and Souji being injured makes him send them both to Osaka for treatment at the end of the season and take full command on himself.

When he learns that Inoue has been murdered, he is vulnerable enough to get easily provoked by Kazama who claims to have done it. It forces Hijikata to take Ochimizu and enhance his strength to fight the demon as equals. Yamazaki jumps in and stops the fight sacrificing himself, and later dies on the ship, which Hijikata comments as "nobody has died in vain".

Second Season

Hijikata's different costumes

After Kondou's injury, Hijikata starts working nonstop fulfilling both Kondou's duties as well as his own, which causes Chizuru and the other members of the Shinsengumi a great deal of concern about his health since he does not eat or sleep. In addition, Hijikata is struggling to control his newly acquired bloodlust caused by his transformation into a Rasetsu. Chizuru keeps trying to make him accept someone's help, and he softens towards her, developing more trust between the two. He takes her with him to Kōfu Castle.

Seeing Okita's poor health condition, Hijikata first harshly tells him that he will be a burden, however, after Chizuru's defense, Hijikata puts Souji's new outfit in front of him and orders him to focus on his health because the vice-commander will be waiting for him. However, on the way to Kōfu Castle through Hino, Hijikata confesses that he does not believe in Shinsengumi's victory, but even so, he does not want to let Kondou suffer defeat.

Seeing the unlucky predicament his men are in, Hijikata suggests going to Edo to get reinforcements. Right before setting off, he tries to make Chizuru leave and save herself, however, when she refuses, he orders her as a Shinsengumi member to protect Kondou by cooperating with Saitou, but not risk her life and survive no matter what. They swear an oath by connecting their swords, even though it is something that only samurai do, that Hijikata will come back and Chizuru will wait for him and survive.

After Saitou brings news that using Rasetsu powers shortens the lifespan, Hijikata orders Sannan to terminate any activity of the Rasetsu Corps. Being left alone with Chizuru, he confirms that he drank Ochimizu on his own accord, therefore will accept the consequences, even if they are lethal. During their conversation he also notices how much Chizuru reminds him of his sister, and these memories almost make him softer with the girl when his bloodlust urge appears again. He pushes Chizuru out of the room and tries to combat the condition, eventually remembering that he has some medicine in his drawer.

Hijikata is shocked to hear an order from Kondou

Hijikata is shocked to hear an order from Kondou

Due to the Shinsengumi being split up, the headquarters in the Nagaoka Inn get surrounded. Hijikata is determined to use his Rasetsu powers to save his subordinates, however, Kondou, having heard the news about how dangerous that might be, orders Hijikata to run and save himself while the commander will act as a decoy. Hijikata tries to object but Kondou plays the commander card on him pushing towards "the commander's orders cannot be disobeyed even by a vice-commander". Hijikata is heartbroken and frustrated when he leaves Kondou behind, but even that does not stop the fight for Hijikata himself. He ends up engaging in a battle against a unit of samurai to make sure his subordinates escape. His rage and pain make him invincible, and he comes victorious very quickly. He remembers his history with Kondou and everything he believes in. Chizuru snuggles up to him from behind, and he screams expressing his sadness.

Shortly after the incident, Keisuke Ootori first introduces himself Hijikata and explains the new military formation and announces that Hijikata is going to lead the vanguard. Later that day Hijikata orders Shimada to go to the main body of the troops instead of the vanguard, Shimada tries to clarify whether the Shinsengumi are going to disappear but Hijikata does not answer his question. After everyone leaves, Chizuru admits that Shimada's words have been eating at her and asks what Hijikata actually thinks. He says it openly that he does not consider it possible to oversee the Shinsengumi all by himself with Kondou gone. When Hijikata opens up about his feelings that there is nothing left to believe in, Chizuru assures him that the soldiers around believe in him. Hijikata seems cheered up when his bloodlust suddenly strikes. Chizuru takes him away deeper into the woods to avoid him being seen by anyone and makes him drink her blood, to which he reluctantly agrees making her turn away and stay still while he is drinking blood from her neck.

The former Bakufu army lays siege on Utsunomiya Castle which allied itself with the Imperial Army. When Hijikata enters the castle, he encounters Kazama and Amagiri in the main hall. Kazama decides that it is time for a payback for the "humiliation" caused by Hijikata (in the last episode of the first season) so he takes out his magic sword with a special blade meant to kill demons and starts a fight with Hijikata injuring him and mocking his suffering due to being active during the day. However, the building gets shot which leads to a huge fire, and when the ceiling between the two fighters falls down due to the whole room being caught in flames, Kazama realizes that it is time to leave and disappears. The Shinsengumi keeps moving towards the Aizu forces, however, Hijikata has to stay behind due to being wounded and getting treatment. Chizuru keeps taking care of him while he is barely conscious. As soon as Hijikata gets better, he starts working which worries Chizuru. Ootori, Shimada and Shinpachi come to visit him, and Ootori scolds Hijikata for his recklessness during the last battle. Ootori's words remind the vice-commander of Yamazaki's last words about the importance of the head over limbs because losing the head is fatal. Hijikata smiles and agrees with Ootori apologizing for his actions.

Okita confronts Hijikata

Okita confronts Hijikata

Later Hijikata gets attacked by Okita for not protecting Kondou. Chizuru stops the conflict, however, Hijikata starts a fight with Saitou to prove being in a condition to lead the vanguard. He is quickly defeated due to his injuries and is forced to stay and recover. While Hijikata is hiding trying to heal the wounds, Okita uses his last lifeforce to kill the conspirators who are planning to assault Hijikata, and the commander comes to witness Okita's death.

Some time passes and Hijikata meets with Takeaki Enomoto who informs him of mysterious murders. Hijikata decides to deal with them by himself suspecting Sannan to be involved. After Chizuru has been kidnapped, Hijikata and Heisuke go after her assuming that Koudou and his Rasetsu are there. Sannan unexpectedly joins them, and they get rid of all the Rasetsu. This exhausts Sannan's and Heisuke's lifeforce, and they meet their end leaving Hijikata and Chizuru alone holding hands and feeling miserable. When the Shinsengumi decides to sail to Ezo, Hijikata orders Chizuru to stay behind and live her life.

White fighting against the Imperial Army in Ezo, Hijikata succeeds in battles but keeps suffering from bloodlust. At some point he even starts hallucinating about Chizuru. Seeing him stressed, Ootori sends a letter to Chizuru and appoints her as Hijikata's attendant. Hijikata tries to reject her but when she does not back down he hugs her and confesses missing her.

Hijikata and Chizuru share a kiss

Hijikata and Chizuru share a kiss

When Hijikata's ship is the only one against eight, his mission fails, and the troops have to re-group on land. His unit succeeds at the Futamata Pass even though Ootori suffers a defeat at the Matsumae Pass. On the night of the news about it, Hijikata loses control of his bloodlust once again, and Chizuru makes him drink her blood. When Hijikata realizes that a major battle is on the horizon, he asks Chizuru once again to leave and save herself. She begs him to let her stay, and he finally confesses being in love with her. They share a passionate kiss.

The Imperial Army commences an all-out attack on Hakodate, and Hijikata jumps on his horse along with Chizuru to assist his comrades. He gets shot and knocked off his horse. Chizuru drags him away and force-feeds him her blood with a kiss. He scolds her because he does not want his beloved woman to suffer. On their way back they meet Kazama by a huge cherry tree, and the demon wishes to finish what they started long ago. Hijikata agrees and engages in a battle. Kazama acknowledges his resolve and bestows the name "Hakuouki" onto him. The last attack brings victory to Hijikata but he drops unconscious. His fate remains unknown.

Third Season

Hijikata argues with Serizawa

Hijikata argues with Serizawa

Hijikata first appears in Episode 1 of Reimeiroku scolding Serizawa for being too reckless in the "red-light district" (the area with geisha inns such as Shimabara). Serizawa, feeling attacked by Hijikata's words, attempts to hit him with his infamous hand fan but Hijikata does not budge claiming that he has not said anything wrong. Serizawa calms down and leaves telling Hijikata to go back to Edo if Serizawa's methods are not suitable for him. Later, Hijikata, Kondou, and Sannan visit Serizawa's room in order to make a deal using Serizawa's connections and the Shieikan's strength and swordsmanship abilities. In a private conversation afterwards, Hijikata admits to Kondou that although he finds Serizawa's help annoying, he has to acknowledge that it is their best option since they need to establish themselves in Kyoto.

When Saitou comes to the Rōshigumi headquarters, Hijikata welcomes him and explains how things are at the moment and who is in charge. As he learns that the city is full of rogue samurai, Hijikata is thrilled since he sees it as a chance for the Rōshigumi to prove themselves.

Hijikata scolding Ryuunosuke

Hijikata scolding Ryuunosuke

Next morning Hijikata, Kondou and Sannan come to Serizawa to announce their intention to protect shōgun Iemochi. Serizawa is less than interested and calls the shōgun inept, which annoys everyone present. After the meeting Hijikata scolds Kondou for acting too nicely in front of Serizawa calling him "Serizawa-dono" and trying to stay in his good favor, reminding Kondou that he is equal to Serizawa and should not feel inferior. While being annoyed with the leadership situation, Hijikata also stumbles upon Ryuunosuke who refuses to learn swordsmanship despite being weak and not ready to protect himself. Hijikata yells at him for having a death wish and not enough resolve to fight for his own life. After he leaves, Sano explains that this is how Hijikata shows care and worry.

Having met Saitou and Shinpachi covered in blood after chasing rogue samurai, Hijikata asks Saitou for his opinion on the enemy. Hearing that the Rōshigumi are outnumbered, he instructs everyone to never go alone. As Sannan mentions that the Rōshigumi are dependent on Serizawa's money and connections, Hijikata frowns, but Sannan tells him to see it as using Serizawa rather than needed his help. However, Hijikata cannot accept that Kondou is not the one leading the Rōshigumi and promises to change it in the future.

As Heisuke comes to the headquarters to tell Kondou and Hijikata about Serizawa's behavior at Shimabara, they both run there to see for themselves. When they arrive, Hijikata yells at Serizawa but the commander is unfazed and quickly leaves with Niimi. The situation prompts Hijikata to create a set of rules for the squad that would stop Serizawa from acting recklessly. He catches Ryuunosuke eavesdropping while he and Sannan discuss the matter. Sannan offers him an official position in the Rōshigumi but Ryuunosuke hesitates, and Hijikata instantly withdraws the offer claiming that they do not need such people in the ranks, revealing after the boy leaves than Sannan only wanted to use him to spy on Serizawa. After the Rules of Conduct are ready, they are shown to Serizawa who does not oppose. The new official document makes the ranks clear, and Hijikata, along with Sannan, becomes the Vice-Commander of the Rōshigumi.

Seeing Souji's unhealthy ambition and wish to kill, Hijikata makes a decision to send him back to Edo. Souji makes a scene and runs away, and the situation creates tension between the two for a long time in the future. Next day, Hijikata questions Ryuunosuke about Serizawa's conversation with Tonouchi and suspects that Serizawa might have said something questionable to Souji. He rushes to look for him but gets stopped by the news that Souji is back at the headquarters. When he comes to see Souji for himself, he and the others learn that Souji has killed Tonouchi. Frustrated, Hijikata bursts into Serizawa's room shouting and blaming the commander. Serizawa laughs at Hijikata's accusations and claims that Tonouchi was two-faced and deserved it since he was about to break the Rules of Conduct. He goes further and calls Hijikata and Kondou soft claiming that they are the ones who should return to Edo. Hijikata silently agrees with a bitter expression on his face.

A few days later, Hijikata mentions in his conversation with Ryuunosuke that, despite Serizawa's actions being despicable, Serizawa's words still manage to get to him and make him realize how naïve they all have been. The vice-commander also clarifies that he is not planning to talk to Okita while Kondou is handling the situation.

Later on, after the Rōshigumi have been granted an audience with the Lieutenant General of Aizu, Kondou organizes a few matches to showcase the Shieikan members' swordsmanship. Hijikata fights against Heisuke and wins.

When the first Rasetsu is created, he escapes and attacks all the members of the Rōshigumi, forcing Hijikata to kill him in order to save Ryuunosuke. Hijikata is absolutely against further experiments on people and protests against it regardless of who gave the order (in this case - Bakufu), but Serizawa uses it to insult Hijikata by saying that the ones who were not born a samurai do not have to understand what it means to follow orders. Kondou stops Hijikata's outburst letting Sannan defuse the situation. After the meeting is over, Hijikata reads a letter from his sister and shares with Inoue that she keeps asking him to take care of himself, not lose his cool and not pick fights with other soldiers. He painfully admits that Serizawa has been doing all the job so far while Hijikata himself has not done anything useful.

Hijikata confronts Serizawa

Hijikata confronts Serizawa

Upon discovering that Serizawa and Souji killed unarmed sumo wrestlers in Osaka, Hijikata gets furious and confronts Serizawa. He blames the commander for acting the same way as rogue samurai and reinforces his goal to make Kondou the commanding samurai in the battle for justice. However, Serizawa claims that his actions were justified and insults Kondou, adding that Hijikata lacks the resolve to dirty himself and become the actual villain. Next morning, Hijikata shares his feelings with Kondou, and they reminisce about their times back in Shieikan many years ago. Their conversation from the past reveals that Hijikata used to consider himself a loser who had never been able to see something through to the end and only sold his family's medicine to keep food on the table. At some point, Hijikata came to a realization that he wanted to become a true samurai, and he believed that the day and age they lived in was exactly the time for miracles to happen, so even people without a samurai lineage can become warriors.

In Saitou's memories of his first appearance in Shieikan, Hijikata commends his strength and states that him being left-handed does not change how strong he is.

A few days later, Hijikata and Sannan stir trouble in the city by fighting thugs who used the Rōshigumi name to forcibly borrow money. They return to the headquarters covered in blood and explain the situation, eventually coming to the conclusion that the Rōshigumi's reputation has dropped very low which can put a stain on the Aizu's reputation as well, and so it has to be stopped.

As Serizawa goes drinking in Osaka, he gets drunk and demands a geisha to undress and dance naked, and when she refuses he makes a scene. Unable to stop him, Shinpachi tells Ryuunosuke to bring Kondou, who soon arrives along with Hijikata. Seeing that Serizawa is too drunk to be reasoned with, Hijikata suggests severing the geisha's chignon and offers to do it himself (to save Ryuunosuke from the necessity to do it per Serizawa's order). The geisha cries and asks for forgiveness but Hijikata does not have a choice.

During a sumo wrestlers' competition Hijikata is informed about another one of Serizawa's crazy actions. He rushes to see for himself only to find a burning building. Serizawa explains his reasoning, but Hijikata orders to put out the fire since Serizawa does not have any proof of what he is saying. Since Serizawa stops him and plays the commander card claiming he would not fabricate a story, Hijikata changes his order to searching the store for evidence. Shortly afterwards, Kondou and Hijikata visit the Aizu in a formal setting. They get praised for their efforts, however, Serizawa's actions have been noticed and cannot be overlooked any longer. Kondou and Hijikata receive a direct order to deal with the commander.

One morning Hijikata wakes up hearing cannon fire close by. Everyone gathers in the common room ready to head out as soon as the order is given but the Aizu are not requesting the Rōshigumi's help. As the inspectors return with a report, it turns out that Aizu and Satsuma are guarding the Sakaimachi Gate from the Chōshū. Hijikata wonders out loud why Aizu and Satsuma are teaming up despite being opposing clans, and Serizawa does not miss a chance to insult him by commenting that the world is not as simple as his mind.

As Koudou's clinic burns down but his body is not found, it is assumed that he has escaped, and Hijikata prioritizes searching for him. He also asks Kondou how to deal with Serizawa per Aizu's order, and he is skeptical that Serizawa will agree to relinquish his post as a commander.

After Niimi's disappearance, all the attempts to find him bring no results but a month later Serizawa gets an intel, and Hijikata orders Yamazaki to investigate. Shortly afterwards, as the information is confirmed, he takes Saitou and Okita and rushes to the restaurant where Niimi was spotted. As they barge into the room with Niimi, one of his companions lashes at Hijikata and gets taken down by Saitou. Seeing no way out, Niimi drinks Ochimizu and turns into a Rasetsu whose speed and agility surpass the Shinsengumi members, and all Hijikata's attacks are futile. Suddenly, tasting some blood on his face, Niimi loses his sanity and gets taken over by the bloodlust. As he kneels down to one of the bodies, Hijikata seizes the opportunity to kill him. Coming back to the headquarters, Hijikata announces that Niimi committed seppuku.

Hijikata kills Serizawa

Hijikata kills Serizawa

As Kondou and Hijikata report the incident to the Aizu, they receive praise but get asked how they are dealing with the commander. Kondou explains that he is trying to persuade him to step down. However, the answer does not satisfy the Aizu, and it is hinted that Serizawa has to be completely disposed of. Kondou green-lights the operation, and Hijikata and others invite Serizawa to Shimabara. After a few hours of relaxation, Serizawa decides to leave, and Hijikata, Sannan and Okita follow him. Assuming that Serizawa is asleep, they enter Serizawa's room and see him holding a sword covered in blood (after he killed Oume) and waiting for their arrival. Hijikata officially announces that Serizawa has gone too far and must die for the sake of the Shinsengumi. Despite Serizawa's laughter, Hijikata stays determined and claims that he will go as far as necessary and even become a demon from hell. Serizawa turns into a Rasetsu to gain advantage and throws off all the captains. As Hijikata is the only one left standing, Serizawa keeps mocking him about not being able to become a demon and surpass the commander. With Sannan's distraction and Okita's attack that immobilized Serizawa, Hijikata gets the chance to pierce through his heart. Surprisingly for Hijikata, Serizawa praises him before dying. Having dealt with Serizawa, Hijikata gives an okay to Sannan's question whether it is necessary to find Ryuunosuke. When Okita tells them that Ryuunosuke fell into the river, Hijikata concludes that right after a heavy downpour Ryuunosuke could not have survived the river's rapids, and they leave it at that. Sannan kindly says that Hijikata is yet to become a true demon in his heart, but Hijikata is determined to become the Demon Vice Commander from that moment on.

Movies

Hijikata apologizes for not being able to save Inoue

Hijikata apologizes for not being able to save Inoue

Hijikata's personality in the movies is drastically different from the anime series. He is shown to be more emotional and aggressive, more interested in protecting Chizuru rather than the Shinsengumi or honor. At the end of the first movie, Hijikata is the one who saves Chizuru, not Kazama. He explains that he came because he had heard about Yodo's betrayal and apologizes to Chizuru, while hugging her, that he could not save Inoue. The fight between him and Kazama ends with Amagiri alone stopping them, which means Hijikata does not kill Yamazaki.

Otherwise, the main storyline is similar to the anime series, however, Hijikata does not witness Okita's death, and Okita does not try to protect Hijikata, on the contrary, Okita calls Hijikata a traitor for leaving everyone behind including Chizuru.

The way Hijikata leaves Chizuru in the second movie is more brutal, he deceives her and leaves her alone in Edo to make sure she does not follow the samurai to war and asks Ryuunosuke to give her a goodbye letter. The way she finds him again is also completely different from the anime series: she uses Kazama's help to travel to Hijikata, and he finds her after one of the shells explodes next to them both, and she is taken inside for treatment where he confesses love for her. It is also not shown if he misses her or remembers her while they are apart.

At the end of Shikon Sōkyū, it is made clear that Hijikata survives as he and Chizuru are looking out over the landscape of a village when he sees an image of all his dead comrades. He simply says sorry to his men as he still has a life to live with Chizuru and will not be joining them just yet, so he simply asks them to watch over them.

Sweet School Life

In the short OVA Hijikata is a teacher and a Disciplinarian Adviser at Hakuou Academy. He makes sure everyone abides by the school rules and gets frustrated when someone breaks them. Unfortunately for Hijikata, it is often teachers, like Harada who runs in the hallway or Shinpachi who shows off his muscles in front of Chizuru due to the medical examination, and even the headmaster Kondou who decides to practice with a wooden sword right in the school hall. Additionally, students like Okita, who always takes pictures of annoyed Hijikata, and Heisuke, who is always late, also disrupt the peace. Kazama, who is the President of the Student's Council, always does whatever he pleases which Hijikata finds infuriating.

Trivia

  • It is a well-known fact that Hijikata has a soft spot for poetry, particularly haiku. But, it is also a well-known fact that he is not very good at it as Souji Okita teases him mercilessly for it and has even memorized all of Hijikata's poems to that end. Hijikata once admits that his poems are bad to save face when Hajime Saitou gets to see them in a drama CD.
  • Hijikata's Family medicine "Ishida Powder" is from the village of Ishida where he grew up. Although there were many people named "Hijikata" in that prefecture, Toshizou's family was the only one that made the medicine.
  • Hijikata also has his own theme song.
